"Interconnection between jewelry design and sculpture"
My jewelry collections are composed of bold forms, graceful curves and crisp lines, derived from the natural, scenic beauty of the San Diego coastline. I utilize the shapes carved out by the waves in the tidal pools, on the eroding cliffs and in the patterns etched on the sand. I try to capture the feeling of the waves crashing, swirling, and captivating our emotions. By extracting the essence of those forms, I am able to translate the movement, power and grace of the ocean into metal. I strive to design jewelry that is sculptural and interesting from every angle, but it can be challenging to design a piece that is both artistically stimulating and still comfortable to wear. This exhibition, “Little and Large”, gave me an opportunity to explore a larger medium. With the creation of sculpture, I found freedom from the limitations of scale and wearabilty. For the first time, I could concentrate solely on the sinuous forms, their movement, and the tensions produced. I focused on the interplay between the positive and negative spaces, between the edges and angles, and between concave and convex shapes. The evolution that resulted is a pair of graceful, sensual sculptures that stayed true to the distinctive style that I am known for in my jewelry. This experience has been a wonderful learning process and a challenging, but fascinating, artistic journey.
