Well, we do have two different varieties of “carrots” here, but they are not the garden type.
In the jewelry industry, we use the terms carat and karat to describe different properties, one is a measurement of weight, and the other is a measurement of purity.
CARAT is a measurement of weight equal to 200 mg or 0.2 grams, based on ancient use of the carob seed as a counterbalance. The weight is broken into 100 “points” in a carat, just as if a dollar is 100 pennies. A diamond weighing 1.25 cts = 1 carat and 25 points or 1 ¼ carats. One aspect of the pricing of diamonds is based on a combination of the carat weight and the total weight of the diamonds. Pricing changes at key intervals such as ½ carat, ¾ carat, 1 carat etc., with the price per carat increasing at those “magic” numbers... For example a 1 ct. diamonds costs significantly more per carat than five 0.20 ct. diamonds, even though they both have a total weight of 1 carat.
KARAT is a measurement of the purity of gold based on mass. It is measured as 24 times the purity by mass. Therefore 18k gold is 75% pure gold and 25% alloy, while 14k gold is 58.33% pure gold and 41.67% alloy. Alloys are various metals added to the gold for a variety of reasons, such as to reduce cost, increase hardness or change the color of the gold. An example would be rose gold which gets its pinkish color from the copper which is added to the gold.
