Although most often diamonds are described as a colorless gem, the majority of diamonds are not truly “white”. Diamond colors vary in degree from colorless to faint yellowish or brownish, and even stronger colors. Fancy colored diamonds come in almost every color of the rainbow. While vividly colored diamonds are rare and often expensive, off-colored or tinted diamonds are less valuable than their colorless counterparts. The universal color-grading chart, created by GIA, uses a letter system that begins with “D” and goes through the alphabet to “Z”. The extremely subtle color difference between two grades is often indiscernible to an untrained eye, however, the difference between several grades can be noticeable. Diamonds that fall in the “D” –“H” categories, are considered colorless or “white”, therefore holding a higher value than those diamonds falling below “I” on the grading scale.
